Sausalito Houseboats
Information, Reviews

Houseboats have been a distinctive feature of Richardson Bay since the late nineteenth century. They started out primarily as summer retreats for wealthy San Francisco families, anchored along the Tiburon shoreline. By the 1960's they had evolved into anarchic floating neighborhoods running along the west shore north from Sausalito. As problems of pollution and safety escalated, though, regulation increased, and the houseboat communities calmed down.

Sausalito's houseboats are still colorful and eccentric, adorned with sculptures and plants. But now they are real houses, permanently attached to city utilities. It is said that, in Marin, the most desirable real estate has a view either of the bay or of Mount Tamalpais. Many houseboats have both.
